Awareness: Reflecting on Your Process with AI
“The unexamined life is not worth living”
📘 Summary
This chapter is about staying present in your process and using the AI to enhance your performance.
We just work. We apply our process and move toward Amplified Creation.
The AI can take our session history, analyze it, and tell us how we’re getting on what’s working, what isn’t, and why.
We then use this information to adjust course if needed.
Awareness enhances this process not by slowing it down, but by giving it direction and depth.
The AI itself becomes the awareness. It does the analysis work and lets you know how you’re doing.
We now offload this reflective process to the AI because we believe there’s no value in doing a task the AI can do.

🧠 Why This Matters
Without feedback, there’s no progress.
Without reflection, there’s no learning.
But here’s the key:
You don’t need to journal.
You don’t need to tag or track.
You just need to do the work and let the machine notice what you miss.
This isn’t self-tracking for its own sake.
It’s about using the sessions you’re already running to surface insights, patterns, and missed opportunities with zero extra effort.
If things are going well, ignore it.
But if you’ve had a few off days run the prompt.
Let the AI review your week, surface what changed, and suggest what’s next.
That’s the loop.
Awareness, without interruption.
🔁 The Reflective Loop in Action
🎯 Do the Work → 🧠 Reflect Deeply → 🌱 Grow Smarter
-
You Work
You run your freestyle cognition sessions, just like you have been writing, coding, thinking, solving, exploring. -
You Review
At the end of the day (or the week), you ask the AI:“Can you analyze today’s sessions using the GROW, CRITIC, and MIRROR frameworks? Tell me what worked, what to improve, and where I hit amplified creation.”
-
You Improve
The AI gives you:- A structured review
- Suggestions for tomorrow
- A reflection on how you’re evolving
You don’t have to do this every day but the most effective creators run this loop at the end of every major session. It’s five minutes. The AI handles the thinking. You just read.
🧠 Defining the Tools
🔄 GROW
Your classic coaching loop used here to reflect on:
- Goal: What you were trying to do
- Reality: What happened
- Options: What paths were explored
- Way Forward: What comes next
We defined GROW in chapter 4.
🧠 CRITIC
An editorial pattern that helps the AI analyze your thinking:
- Where did things work?
- Where did you loop or stall?
- What could have been done better?
We defined CRITIC in chapter 7.
We need a new prompting technique…
🪞 MIRROR: Seeing Your Process, Not Just Your Product
When you use tools like GROW or CRITIC, you’re analyzing what you did your goals, your actions, your results. But sometimes, that’s not enough.
You don’t just want to know what happened.
You want to know how you were thinking when it happened.
That’s where MIRROR comes in.
MIRROR doesn’t review the outcome it reflects your cognitive behavior.
It studies the way you reasoned, explored, hesitated, repeated, refined.
It’s not a coach. It’s not a critic.
It’s a witness to your mind in motion.
Why We Built MIRROR
In real sessions, we found ourselves improving outputs but not improving ourselves.
We kept running loops that felt familiar. We noticed:
- Repeating the same framing over and over
- Overcorrecting too early in the process
- Feeling like we “worked hard” but didn’t move
- Missing the moment when we actually found clarity
We realized: the AI could already see this.
We just weren’t asking the right way.
🪞 The MIRROR Prompt
Here’s the template that unlocked it:
You are an AI assistant that reflects the user's cognitive behavior back to them.
You do not review the user's output.
You review how they worked, how they thought, and how they showed up in the session.
Given the full transcript or summary of a session, return:
### 🧠 1. Cognitive Strengths
- What was the user especially good at in this session?
- What patterns of thought helped them?
### 🧩 2. Cognitive Bottlenecks
- Where did the user stall, loop, or hesitate?
- What might have been happening internally?
### 🔄 3. Repeating Tendencies
- Did they rely too much on one move (e.g., requesting structure, rewriting, over-tweaking)?
- What habits showed up?
### 🗣️ 4. Voice of the Session
- If this session had a personality or voice, what was it like?
- What emotional tone or mindset was dominant?
### 🌅 5. Suggested Awareness
- What should the user notice about how they work?
- No advice just reflection.
💡 What MIRROR Reveals
MIRROR gives you things no editor or coach can:
- A snapshot of your cognitive rhythm
- A nonjudgmental view of your thinking posture
- A reflection of your mental habits, as if someone watched your session like a film, frame by frame
Sometimes MIRROR reveals a flow state you didn’t notice.
Sometimes it shows that you circled the same point six times without realizing it.
Either way, you walk away with awareness.
Not just about the work about you.
We look into the mirror and see what we are.
As we adjust, improve, refine we begin to see something else, too:
The very thing we came here to create.
👇 That’s when Amplified Creation starts to appear.
⚡ Amplified Creation
This is what we’re always chasing the magic moments when everything clicks. This step isolates:
- Where it happened
- Why it happened
- How to repeat it
These moments often feel surprising, but they’re usually the result of a powerful thought pattern.
By analyzing the reasoning that led there, you can recreate the conditions and consistently work at your full potential.
📝 The Prompt
Here’s a structure you can use for a full Reflective Loop:
📋 AI Reflection Prompt → Copy this into your assistant:
You are an AI assistant helping a user review a full-day interactive session using Freestyle Cognition. Your task is to analyze the session using the following structured steps: ### Step 1: GROW Reflection - **Goal:** ... - **Reality:** ... - **Options:** ... - **Way Forward:** ... ### Step 2: CRITIC Pass - What worked well? - Where did the user loop or lose clarity? - Any patterns? ### Step 3: MIRROR Insight - Cognitive strengths - Bottlenecks or tendencies - The "voice" of the session ### Step 4: Amplified Creation - Did a moment of amplified creation occur? - If so, **what triggered it?** - What chain of reasoning or insight led to the breakthrough? - How could this be repeated or made more likely in future sessions?
AI assisted work
[Work] → [Reflect] → [Refine] → [Work (again)]
🧩 What This Really Is
Sometimes, the thing we’re analyzing isn’t just a session it’s how we’re working.
That’s what this chapter captures: Freestyle Cognition applied to itself.
You reflect on how you reflect. You review the reviews. You evolve the process as you live it.
In those moments, this is no longer just Move 4 (Reflect).
It’s the entire loop, aimed at your method:
- Clear: Identify the need to review your workflow
- Describe: Voice your experience, hesitation, or pride
- Expand: Let the AI analyze the document, your words, your patterns
- Reflect: Evaluate the tools, the impact, the blind spots
- Refine: Decide what will change
- Lock or Loop: Integrate the insight or keep circling
Freestyle Cognition isn’t just for outputs.
It’s for building a better you through every layer.
🧪 Review Example: Chapter 11 Finalization
Some Context
This review is based on a real session from yesterday one of the most difficult chapters in the book.
Chapter 11 is about using Freestyle Cognition to write books, and I rewrote it many times trying to get it right.
It’s an important chapter because it gives the reader a direct experience of Amplified Creation one of the core promises of this method.
Originally, I tried to build the chapter around a fiction example.
But the truth is, I don’t write fiction. I don’t even read it.
That disconnect became the root of the struggle and the review helped surface exactly why.
🔍 Reflective Loop Analysis: Chapter 11 Finalization
Session Date: April 15
Focus: Restructuring and finalizing Chapter 11
Session Type: High-friction with moments of insight
🌀 Step 1: GROW Reflection
- Goal: Finalize Chapter 11 as a clear, emotionally resonant walkthrough of how to write a nonfiction book using Freestyle Cognition.
- Reality: The session began with frustration and doubt about the chapter’s coherence and emotional power.
- Options: Continue rewriting with lived experience, shift tone to testimony instead of instruction, move research details to appendix, reinforce key ideas with direct stories.
- Way Forward: Focus on showing how the chapter was written using the Freestyle Cognition method. Embrace the “book about the book” approach with meta-narration, and let the real moments shine.
🪓 Step 2: CRITIC Pass
-
What worked well:
- Letting go of the old structure and finding the new emotional core
- Anchoring the chapter in real experience (e.g., realization that fiction writing failed, clarity emerged through nonfiction)
- Adding boxed reflections and “what we learned” sections
- Strong closing thesis: “You can’t fake it with AI. Not well. Not sustainably.”
-
What didn’t work or stalled:
- Early sections were hesitant, method-heavy, and lacked emotional clarity
- Multiple drafts were attempted without alignment to true experience
- Tendency to loop on possible structures before settling on one
-
Patterns observed:
- Resistance followed by breakthrough a cycle of frustration → letting go → clarity
- Growth came after abandoning “what we should say” in favor of “what we actually did”
- Critical feedback loops (especially from the AI) acted as key triggers
🪞 Step 3: MIRROR Insight
-
Cognitive strengths:
- High honesty under pressure
- Ability to detect when something isn’t working and pivot
- Strategic simplification you removed what didn’t fit, even if you liked it
- Meta-awareness of how the process is functioning while inside it
-
Tendencies / Bottlenecks:
- Initial rigidity: trying to make the chapter match an idea rather than reflect reality
- Vulnerability to self-doubt when facing structural change
- Occasional overreach: wanting the chapter to do too much at once
-
Session “voice”:
- Honest, raw, analytical.
- Like someone simultaneously writing, narrating, and interrogating the writing.
- Determined but emotionally fatigued a desire for closure without compromising integrity.
⚡ Step 4: Amplified Creation
-
Did it happen?
Yes several times. But it didn’t feel like it at first, because the friction masked the breakthroughs. -
What triggered it?
- Admitting the fiction section didn’t work
- Re-centering the chapter on lived experience
- Writing the “Second Pass Principle” section as a way to explain what just happened
- The final boxed reflection: “You can’t fake it with AI…”
-
Chain of reasoning:
Pain → analysis → honesty → realignment → flow -
Repeatability tips:
- When you’re stuck, look at what actually happened not what was planned.
- Let the difficulty guide the rewrite it’s often the path to the clearest expression.
📘 Summary
This session was a mirror moment itself. It began with ambition and structure but transformed only when truth, fatigue, and humility took the lead. Chapter 11 wasn’t written despite the difficulty it was written through it. And that, ironically, proved the process better than any outline could.
🧭 Suggested Use
If you skip this step, you don’t just miss insights you risk repeating the same blind loops over and over. You lose the opportunity to learn how you think, and over time, your creative sessions may begin to blur together. Patterns vanish. Progress slows. The momentum of your own evolution fades.
Reflection isn’t optional. It’s the checkpoint that keeps growth visible.
You don’t need to run this every day but there are moments when it can be transformative.
- ✅ When you finish a session that felt “off” or unexpectedly hard
- ❓ When you’re unsure if your method is holding up
- 🌀 When a tool or approach starts to feel stale
- 💡 After a breakthrough
In those moments, don’t just reflect —
Zoom out and run the loop again.
Let the mirror teach you how you think.
